Obesity

The global rate of obesity has doubled over the past three decades. The obesity epidemic now represents a significant public health risk not only in high-income countries like the US but also in middle- and low-income countries worldwide.

In the US, 40% of the adult population and 19% of the pediatric and adolescent populations are obese. Obesity is associated with a 2.4-year reduction in lifespan, increases mortality risk by 18%, and causes almost 500,000 deaths annually in the US. Furthermore, obesity increases the risk of comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea, and cancer. However, weight loss of just 5 to 10% reduces the risk and severity of these conditions.

NuSirt has preclinical and clinical data demonstrating that TRIPLN® and similar leucine combinations produce (a) a shift in energy disposition from storage in adipose tissue to oxidation in skeletal muscle, and (b) significant decreases in body weight and fat, waist circumference, and rates of comorbidities.

LEUSIX® has similar properties to TRIPLN® with respect to weight management. In a Phase 2 trial, obese patients who took LEUSIX® and made mild lifestyle changes lost weight and showed improved overall cardiometabolic health, including increased insulin sensitivity. NuSirt is planning to begin a follow-up Phase 2 trial on LEUSIX® in patients who currently take or who have recently stopped GLP-1s. We predict that LEUSIX® will be able to counteract the muscle loss caused by GLP-1s while still supporting weight loss.
